Neo vs. Simplii: Find the best credit card for restaurants & retail purchases
Published on August 4, 2026 · 6 min read
If you spend money at restaurants, coffee shops and retailers, the right credit card can earn you hundreds of dollars back every year. The wrong one earns you almost nothing on the same purchases.
Two cards stand out for Canadians whose biggest spends revolve around restaurants and retail: the Neo Shop & Dine card and the Simplii Financial Cash Back Visa. Both deliver strong dining perks, but they’re built differently—and for people who want the best return on meals, mall trips and online purchases, one emerges as the obvious winner.
Neo Shop & Dine vs. Simplii Cash Back Visa: A quick comparison
The Neo Shop and Dine card is available in two tiers. The World Mastercard has no annual fee, while the World Elite tier comes with a $149 fee—but unlocks more perks and higher cashback thresholds across multiple categories.

Cashback comparison
Get multi-category cashback and higher spend caps with Neo
The Shop & Dine card is one of three Neo cashback credit cards. These cards are built for the way most people actually spend—not just at restaurants, but at grocery stores, gas stations, and more. With the Neo Shop & Dine card, you get cashback not only for your dinner out, but your outfit for the evening, or even a present you grab along the way for a friend.
Neo World Mastercard® - Shop & Dine
Earn cashback on your shopping & dining. With no annual fee.

Cashback earned on a) retail shopping and b) food and drink is subject to a monthly spend limit of $500 per category. When the monthly spend limit is reached, subsequent spending in these categories earns 0.5%. Spend limit resets monthly. Any refunds, rebates, or similar credits will reduce or cancel the cashback earned on the original eligible purchase. Purchases on Amazon and wholesale are not eligible for retail shopping cashback.
Both the dining and shopping earn rates are capped at a $500 monthly spend. This means you can get cashback on up to $6,000 worth of purchases throughout the year. The cashback doesn’t stop after you reach the spend cap, either: After hitting the $500 monthly spend cap, you still earn 0.5% in cashback.
Neo World Elite® Mastercard - Shop & Dine
Earn cashback on your shopping & dining. Premium travel insurance included.

Cashback earned on a) retail shopping and b) food and drink is subject to a monthly spend limit of $1,000 per category. When the monthly spend limit is reached, subsequent spending in these categories earns 1%. Spend limit resets monthly. Any refunds, rebates, or similar credits will reduce or cancel the cashback earned on the original eligible purchase. Purchases on Amazon and wholesale are not eligible for retail shopping cashback.
Meanwhile, with the World Elite tier of Neo’s Shop & Dine card, both shopping and dining categories are capped at a monthly spend of $1,000—a combination that doesn’t exist anywhere else at these rates.
You can spend up to $12,000 per year across each of these categories, knowing you’ll get cashback on every single dollar. When you surpass the spend cap, you can rest easy knowing you’ll still be earning 1% cashback.
Let’s look at the math. If you tend to spend $500 on dining and $300 on retail shopping every month, the Neo World Elite Shop & Dine card would earn you $34 in monthly cashback. That’s $408 in cashback earned at the end of the year—plus additional perks. Even with the annual fee, you’d still walk away with $259 of cold, hard cashback.
And then there’s the Neo partner network. Neo has thousands of partner merchants across Canada where you can earn an average of 5%⁴ cashback on top of your base rate—unlocking even more earning opportunities.
What about Simplii’s cashback?
Simplii earns 4% on eligible restaurants, bars and coffee shops. Despite this competitive rate, it’s capped at only $5,000 annually and is restricted only to dining. Some of Simplii’s other cashback perks include:
- 1.5% cashback on eligible gas, grocery and drugstore purchases, as well as pre-authorized payments, up to an annual spend of $15,000.
- 0.5% cashback on everything else, including retail shopping.
Let’s look at the same example we gave above.
If you tend to spend $500 on dining and $300 on shopping every month, with Simplii’s cashback rates, you earn $21.50 in monthly cashback for most of the year—and then you hit a spend cap. At the end of the year, your earnings for these categories are capped at $223.
