Checkout counter sticker shock is real. Fortunately, some relief might be right around the corner. On June 5, 2026, the federal government is issuing a special one-time top-up payment to help with your everyday expenses.
This lump-sum cheque is designed to help ease the sting of high food prices before the GST/HST credit program is permanently replaced by the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit this July. It’s essentially free money—but spending it as cash or debit leaves money on the table. Use a grocery cashback card, and you get the most value through rewards.
Match your government cheque with a high-rate cashback card like the Neo World Mastercard® - Gas & Grocery, and you can turn a one-time lump sum into a recurring savings loop.
What is the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit?
The Goods and Services Tax (GST/HST) credit that you have known for years is officially being replaced. Starting July 2026, the program is permanently transitioning to a new name: the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. Along with this rebrand comes a permanent 25% increase to your standard quarterly payments for the next five years, from 2026 to 2031.
To bridge the gap before those larger quarterly checks officially roll out this summer, the federal government is launching the new program with a one-time top-up. It lands in eligible bank accounts on June 5, 2026 and gets cash into Canadians’ hands one month before the updated payout program changes roll out in July.
Canada Grocery Rebate eligibility
Do you qualify for the June 5 drop? The parameters are straightforward:
- Who receives the rebate: You are eligible for this one-time top up if you were entitled to receive a GST/HST credit payment in January 2026, but because this benefit is income-tested for low-to-modest-income households, it has maximum limits based on your family size. View the Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI) cut-offs to see what you qualify for.
- What you need to do: There is no special application process. Canada grocery rebate eligibility is determined automatically by the CRA, provided you filed your 2024 tax return, as well as that of your spouse if you are married or common-law.
- When and how the rebate is delivered: The funds will land via direct deposit or mail starting June 5. The line item in your bank account may still be labeled “GST/HST credit”.
How much money will you receive?
Your payout size is calculated based on two factors: your family situation as of January 2026 and your 2024 adjusted family net income.
To figure out the cash amount you will receive, the CRA looks at the base GST/HST credit you were already entitled to receive for the entire year. The June 5 cheque gives you a lump sum worth exactly 50% of that total annual amount. Think of it like getting an extra six months' worth of credit all at once. For instance, if your regular annual credit adds up to $534, your one-time June 5 check will be exactly $267.
Here is the maximum amount you can expect to see hit your account on June 5:
- Single individuals (no children): Up to $267
- Married or common-law couples (no children): Up to $349
- Families with 1 child: Up to $441
- Families with 2 children: Up to $533
- Families with 3 children: Up to $625
Have more kids than that? The benefit structure increases by an extra $92 for each additional child. Keep in mind that if you share equal custody of a child, the CRA automatically splits the payout, meaning you will receive 50% of the amount for that child, and your ex will receive the rest.
Once you add this June bonus to the higher quarterly payments coming your way in July, total federal support for the 2026 to 2027 benefit year maxes out at $950 if you are single, and up to $1,890 for a family of four (two adults and two children).
How to maximize your Canada Grocery Rebate top-up
Let’s look at the real-world math for a family of four who qualifies for the maximum rebate structure. On June 5, this family will receive a one-time federal payment of $533. Using the right card can unlock more free money with a dedicated grocery cashback card like the Neo World Mastercard - Gas & Grocery.
Neo World Mastercard - Gas & Grocery
This card is an excellent option if you want your everyday spending to be rewarded at no annual fee. With 2% cashback on grocery spends up to $1,000 per month (0.5% cashback thereafter), it’s a simple way to stretch your rebate check further. Here is the card’s earning structure:
- Grocery cashback: 2% on up to $1,000 spend per month, 0.5% thereafter¹
- Gas & EV cashback: 2% on up to $1,000 spend per month, 0.5% thereafter
- Recurring bills cashback: 2% on up to $500 spend per month, 0.5% thereafter²
- Cashback on everything else: 0.5% unlimited
- Annual income requirements: $50,000 personal or $80,000 for household
Let’s assume that the same family of four uses their one-time rebate with their Neo World Mastercard - Gas & Grocery card. Simply doing this stretches their $533 federal cheque into $543.66 of buying power. That’s $10.66 in cashback that they can redeem anytime.
A loyalty stacking tip: You don’t have to choose between credit card cash back and your favourite store programs. You can scan your store loyalty card at the checkout to earn store points, and then pay with your Neo World Mastercard to earn your cash back on top.
Secured Neo World Mastercard
If you meet the Neo World Mastercard’s eligibility requirements but are building or repairing your credit history, opt for the secured version of the card. This path offers a smoother approval process⁴ while keeping the exact same 2% grocery cashback rate.
